Egypt officially opens its long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum.
If the gods are on our side, the big (and full) inauguration will take place on July 3, 2025. Whether it happens or not, you’re about to be the first to know 5 key facts about the Grand Egyptian Museum:
the largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization
The Grand Egyptian Museum is the largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization. It covers 500,000 square meters and holds over 100,000 artifacts from the Pharaonic, Greek, and Roman periods.
the museum will display all 5,000 treasures from King Tutankhamun’s tomb
For the first time since its discovery in 1922, the museum will display all 5,000 treasures from King Tutankhamun’s tomb (including 2,000 pieces never seen before) offering a unique glimpse into the life and wealth of the legendary boy king.
much more than exhibitions
The museum is much more than exhibitions: it’s a dynamic cultural hub. It features an Egyptology-focused archaeological library, a research and restoration center, educational spaces for museum professionals, a conference center with theaters, and a creative zone for workshops and cultural programs.
The oldest organic artifact ever discovered
The Khufu Boat Museum and Courtyard showcases the oldest and largest organic artifact ever discovered. In 2021, the 42-meter-long, 20-ton Solar Boat of Khufu was transported in one piece from the Giza Plateau to the museum, where it now rests in a 6,000-square-meter exhibit space.
21st century architectural marvel
Designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, the Grand Egyptian Museum is a 21st-century architectural marvel. It merges modern innovation with ancient inspiration, featuring a 46-meter-tall translucent stone façade, a folded roof aligned with the pyramids, and a colossal statue of Ramses II dramatically lit by a celestial alignment.
Since you’re in Cairo, don’t miss Al-Azhar Park, a green oasis in the heart of the city’s historic district. Inspired by classical Islamic garden design, the park’s layout centers around a water axis with fountains flowing into a small lake, and walkways that lead your gaze straight to the Citadel of Cairo. Among many honors, Al-Azhar Park is recognized as one of the 60 Great Public Spaces of the World.
