Grand Train Adventures through Southern Africa

Since its founding in 1989, Rovos Rail has earned an international reputation for delivering first-class travel experiences. Tailor-made train safaris through the heart of Africa combine breathtaking scenery with the glamour and excitement of the golden age of leisure travel. On journeys ranging from 48 hours to 16 nights, Rovos Rail connects some of the continent’s most remarkable destinations, offering a variety of off-train excursions. The beautifully restored, wood-paneled trains—pulled by either diesel or electric locomotives—can accommodate up to 72 passengers in 36 magnificently appointed suites and are also available for private charter.

Crossing the Continent from East to West

15 Nights • 4,300 km
This journey departs from Tanzania’s capital, Dar es Salaam—a city Rovos Rail knows well, having operated its Cape to Dar route there since 1993. Highlights include a visit to the Selous Reserve, a two-night safari with a direct flight to South Luangwa National Park (Zambia), and a city tour of Lubumbashi (DRC). The route then joins the Benguela line for short walking tours exploring Angola’s recent history, ending in the coastal city of Lobito.

In July 2019, Rovos Rail launched this new 15-day expedition through Tanzania, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Angola. It marked the first time in history that a passenger train traveled the legendary copper route from east to west—an inaugural journey that proved to be a resounding success.
